Classification of Living Things

  1. In your notebook write a definition of Scientific Classification. Feel free to quote a good definition off the Internet then under that write a summary in your words of what you think that means.
  2. Then under that write a definition of Taxonomy. Do the same thing you did with the other definition (first quote a good definition then summarize it in your own words).
  3. While looking up Classification you probably found some websites that talked about the five or six kingdoms. If you didn't find any, find some now. Write down the six kingdoms that scientists use to classify living things. For each kingdom give and draw two to three examples of living things that belong to each kingdom. (Don't forget to label each of your drawings.)
  4. Below you see a graphic representation of the classification levels used by scientists in classifying living things. Pick one of your favorite animals or plants or any other living thing and list all the levels below that it belongs to from Kingdom to Species. If you pick two you can compare them, especially two that are closely related so that you can see where they veer off from each other (usually the species or genus).
  5. When you are done with number 4, try this Critter Classification Quiz.
