Course I A Math
Al González
Block A (Day 1, 8:35 am - 10:25 am)
Dear parent(s) or guardian(s),
This year, your child will be taking Glencoe's Course I math. Each year of school your child will need to pass a test to move forward to the next level of math as well as get good grades in class and do all assigned homework. The score on the test, the class grade and your child's homework average are all taken into account in his/her math placement when considering whether s/he is ready to move on to Course II and so on. Since the Glencoe math series can be challenging, remember that especially in the higher math, grades of C and B are considered quite good.
Your child will benefit most from having his/her own calculator (preferably a scientific calculator - a graphing calculator is not necessary at this point). The Glencoe Math series assumes that each student can multiply and divide well by hand, but there are times when they can use a calculator.
Homework assignment sheets, or Study Guides, will be coming home with your child, and I plan to give math homework every time we meet for math (except for maybe the first day).. Please feel free to assist your child with any of these. I will be grading on a regular scale from A to F where an A+ is 100% and an F is 59% or less. Each chapter of the Glencoe text is broken down into anywhere from eight to twelve lessons that focus on a math concept. There are fourteen chapters in the book and in order for us to get to most of it we will be working on two lessons each math block. Remember that math is only every other day for an hour and fifty minutes, so we realistically can do that. If a child wishes to take her or his book home, that is acceptable just please make sure that the book is protected and that it is not left at home. Those books are pretty expensive and we do not have enough if a student loses his or her book.
Here is a run down of the content of each chapter in Course I:
