Market Day is almost here!

Dear Parent(s),

The sixth grade will be holding their Latin American Market Day someday in December. Once booths are setup, students will open up for business. Students will be working in groups of two to five and make a booth about a specific Latin American country or countries. Students need to create artifacts of their country or countries as if they were a museum. Students can create crafts and items typical of their countries or students can make food typical of their countries. Students will try to sell their product for class money, no real money please. The students will have to pay rent for their booth space as well as pay for food and/or business licenses with class money.

What you can do…

In the next two weeks your child will be coming to you with ideas and plans for Market Day. Students in the sixth grade have been working hard to earn money by keeping up with assignments and getting good grades. Some have been doing extra work around the classroom to earn extra money and others have been running a bank for sixth grade students. Students have either been using their money or saving it.

As we learn about all the various cultures and peoples of Latin America, students will get a chance to work in groups to make a booth to sell wares in a Latin American open-air style market. That is the motivation behind our sixth grade Market Day. Groups can make and bring typical Latin American dishes, arts, crafts or anything they can think of that has something to do with any of the Latin American countries we are studying.

To rent a booth space and buy food or business licenses costs money, but students stand to make quite a handsome profit if they can be good businesspeople. Booths will receive points for authenticity and for the authenticity of their product and/or food, plus if the members dress up in appropriate Latin American costumes.

In class, students will be given time to meet in their groups and plan. They will have limited supplies to make ads, signs or banners.

It would really help students if they can do the bulk of their preparations at home. Making of food must be done at home on Thursday December 7, the day before the actual event. Please make that hot food is kept at temperatures of over 145o F and then quickly cooled to less than 45o F. On Friday morning, students can leave their food dishes or arts and crafts in their homeroom class before they go to their first period class.

We don't expect parents to spend a lot of their own money on this so use your best judgement. There are a lot of inexpensive ways students can create great things for their booths. See your homeroom teacher if you have any questions.
