6th grade Science:

Monday - Today I will give teams one more day to finish typing their notes onto Word. Teams that are done can start taking their typed information and decide how they will chunk that information. They need to determine what information will go on separate pages of their wiki.

HW - Finish taking notes at home so that you can type in class. If you can type your notes at home, email them to me. Just make sure you are writing in your own words - no plagiarism.

Tuesday - Many still need more time to type their notes so I will let them keep working on them today. As long as most teams need more time I can continue extending the deadline. So far I've read some really good information so I'm hopeful that students will be making fantastic wikis!

HW - Same as yesterday

Wednesday - Just as yesterday, all teams still needed more so we took today as well to continue typing and making sure their information makes sense.

From my preliminary readings I am finding the follow things:

  1. Teams are not doing a good job of editing. Teams call me over to read their work and I am finding grammar and spelling errors. I'm not sure how well teammates are helping each other because when one person is typing and there are two other people to read over their shoulder they should be catching grammar and spelling mistakes.
  2. I'm finding some dangerously plagiarized work. What I mean by that is students are changing many words but not knowing what they read the "new" sentences don't make sense. When I read sentences and paragraphs that use adult words I ask the author what it means and most students don't even know what they're writing! I have told students that if they don't know what it means, they can't write it down. I'm also asking students to make sure they see me if they don't understand what they're reading so they understand it enough to write about it in their own words!
  3. The whole purpose of this project is to learn how Chimacum Creek is doing this year. Yet sadly enough I've been reading very little about Chimacum Creek. What I'm asking is for students to write one paragraph, a concluding paragraph, where they share their data and explain what that means for our creek.

That should make their information better and more complete.

HW - Same as Monday.

Thursday - Students needed today as well to continue typing their water quality notes.

HW - Same as Monday

Friday - Today I showed students how to take the data 6th graders have been collecting since 2002 to create a graph showing how their parameter has changed for Chimacum Creek over the past eight years!

HW - Same as Monday

7/8 grade Science:

Monday - Today we will go over the isostasy simulator and the results of the different variations.

Then students will begin an earth rocks density measurement activity.

HW - Complete the Isostasy Blog or Glog.

Tuesday - Today we will continue our earth rocks density measurement activity. Students are finding the differences in density of the continental crust (granite), the oceanic crust (basalt) and the mantle (peridotite). They will use what they've learned about isostasy to make inferences about the difference in elevation between the continents and the ocean floors.

Then we will start an Earth Movement Project. Here are the plate boundary job maps if you need to see them again.

HW - Complete the Isostasy Blog or Glog.

Wednesday - Teams are choosing their plate for the Earth Movement Project and jobs. Today teams will start to work on learning their jobs so they can start finding patterns in the data.

HW - Complete the Isostasy Blog or Glog.

Thursday - Teams are continuing to work on the Earth Movement Project. Today teams made observations about their specific jobs.

HW - Complete the Isostasy Blog or Glog.

Friday - Teams are continuing to work on the Earth Movement Project. Today teams are beginning to define different plate boundary types in their job teams first. Then they began to share what they came up with in their small teams.

HW - Complete the Isostasy Blog or Glog. (It's still homework because 99% of students haven't done it yet and it's now a zero grade.)
