The Pacific Northwest in the US is a great vacation spot. So why would you spend time and money to travel to Canada and spend your vacation there?

Phase 1: Take a pre-test and see what you know about our closest neighbor. After the pre-test each student will get a Basic Information Packet. Students will complete true/false questions, fill in the blank questions, timelines, graphs and government information using a Canada student guide booklet to learn more about Canada.

Then each team will be assigned one the following Canadian Regions. This is what teams will research to create projects to share with the rest of the class (each table will represent one of the following):

  1. Maritimes - New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island
  2. Ontario, Nunavut, Northwest Territory
  3. Prairie Provinces - Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan
  4. British Columbia, Yukon
  5. Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador

During this phase students will earn Maple Leaf Dollars to spend on Phase 3. For this phase, students can earn the following:

  • For the first three pages of the Basic Info Packet, 53 questions, $2 per question for a total of $106 possible.
  • For the next four pages of the Basic Info Packet, $29.75 per page for total of $119 possible.
  • For the project students can earn a total of $225 based on the information gathered and the presentation of that information.
  • Grand total possible: $450 per person.

Phase 2: Now each team is a travel agency and each team will prepare a PowerPoint presentation to convince tourists to plan a vacation at one of their provinces or territories. Every team member must participate in the creation and presentation of the PowerPoint. The presentation must show that teams know their provinces or territories.

During this phase students can earn the following:

  • Presentation style can earn up to $100.
  • PowerPoint slideshow can earn up to $175 for the information gathered on each slide, and
  • PowerPoint slideshow can earn up to $175 for the pictures used on each slide.
  • Grand total possible: $450 per person.

Phase 3: Now the teams represent a family and together each group will plan a two-week vacation to the province or territory of their choice! Now students will get to use the Maple Leaf Dollars they earned in phases 1 and 2 to plan their family vacation. By this phase, the kids with the most money in each group get to be the parents of the family and get final say on which provinces their family will visit. I am sure that the parents will take into account what their children want :o)

They are to plan a 14 day vacation spending up to $250 a day for a trip total of up to $3,500. Those teams who do extra credit can earn up to their trip total or even more! Teams who manage to earn more than $3,500 will receive extra credit points for those members who earned the extra monies.
